Continuous Slurry Hydrocracking of Biobased Fast Pyrolysis Oil

Co-refining of fast pyrolysis bio-oil together with fossil oil in existing refinery infrastructure is an attractive and cost-efficient route to conversion lignocellulosic biomass transportation fuel. However, due large differences properties between the two oils, special notice needed reduce process-related issues. Here, produced from was co-refined vacuum gas at a 20:80 weight ratio continuous operation pilot-scale slurry hydrocracker order investigate impact process parameters on product quality performance. Mass balances characterization were used yields, composition, hydrodeoxygenation. Best hydrodeoxygenation achieved using unsupported catalyst loading 900 ppm Mo either low temperature (410 °C) long residence time (2 h) or higher (435 shorter (1 h). These settings resulted about 94% but also led highest yield biogenic carbon phase (40–43 wt %) lowest fractions (53–56 as well water fraction (3–5 %). Successfully, coke remained around 0.07–0.10 % for all performed runs, which comparable insoluble particle content feed presence particles untreated bio-oil. Co-processing seems be robust regard formation, should lead reduced plugging issues compared fixed bed hydrotreaters. Although this study gives brief understanding effect processing bio-oil, further research required find optimal fully comprehend possibilities limitations production fuels technology.
